Nearly six million egg-laying hens in Washington state are suffering in cruel battery cages. With less space than a sheet of paper per hen, the birds are unable to move freely, turn around or even stretch their wings. Battery cage confinement is one of the most abhorrent practices found on U.S. factory farms today. That’s why Farm Sanctuary, along with a coalition of animal welfare, food safety and environmental groups, is working to place a measure on Washington’s November ballot aimed at banning intense cage confinement and requiring that these hens have enough room to turn around and extend their wings. Additionally, the measure would make the sale of eggs from battery cage facilities illegal. Learn more about the suffering of hens in battery cages.
